How much money does your dental practice lose to missed calls?

Call-tracking studies show dental front desks miss roughly a third of inbound calls. Here is the arithmetic for what that costs your practice, and how to get the revenue back.

The number nobody tracks

Ask a practice owner how many inbound calls went unanswered last week and almost none can answer. The phone system logs every one; between check-ins, payments, and the patient standing at the counter, no one gets a spare moment to look. That is not neglect. It is a two-person desk doing five jobs at once. Industry call-tracking analyses consistently put unanswered calls at roughly a third of all inbound calls at dental offices, clustered around lunch, mornings, and the minutes when the team is checking in patients.

Meanwhile, consumer research finds that most patients look online first and call more than one practice. A first-time caller who reaches voicemail rarely waits. They dial the next practice on the list.

Do your own arithmetic

This is not a made-up industry statistic. It is your numbers, multiplied:

  • Count last week's inbound calls (your phone system logs this).
  • Count how many went unanswered. A third is typical; yours may differ.
  • Estimate how many of those were bookable: new patients, reschedules, emergencies.
  • Multiply by your average production per visit.

Even conservative inputs produce an uncomfortable monthly figure, and that is before counting the lifetime value of a new patient family that never got through, or the 1 in 7 appointments that published no-show research says will quietly empty a chair anyway.

Why hiring more front desk is not the fix

The American Dental Association's workforce surveys have ranked staffing among dentistry's top challenges for years. Adding headcount to catch phone peaks means paying a full-time salary for a two-hour-a-day problem, assuming you can hire at all.
