Oriva for Open Dental practices
Open Dental is the first integration we are building. Here is what your practice can do today without waiting for it, and exactly where the native connection stands.
What works today, with no integration
None of this needs a connection to your database. It runs beside Open Dental rather than inside it.
The call before the visit
Oriva calls the patient ahead of their appointment, in English or Spanish, and asks what a dentist would ask. Your incoming line and your front desk are untouched.
A brief in your inbox
What hurts, how long it has hurt, what makes it worse, what they have already tried, and how urgent it looks. Delivered before the patient sits down.
Your workflow, unchanged
Your team keeps scheduling and charting in Open Dental. Nothing is installed on your server and no one has to learn a second system.
What the native integration will add
In active development. Timelines may change, and we would rather say that than promise a date.
Reads scheduling context
So Oriva knows who is booked, for what, and when, without anyone sending us a list each morning.
In progressWrites the brief to the record
The triage brief attached to the patient in Open Dental, so the team reads it where they already work instead of in email.
In progressGoverned by a BAA
Protected health information is processed under a HIPAA business associate agreement with your practice. More in how we handle data.
Why Open Dental first
Two reasons, and neither is that it was easiest to spell.
It is built to be integrated with
Open Dental publishes a documented API and runs a developer program, which is not the norm in dental software. Starting where the door is already open means we spend the time on triage quality instead of on getting through the door.
It is where independent practices are
Independent and small-group practices are who we are building for: the ones where an unannounced emergency rearranges the whole afternoon. Open Dental is heavily represented among them. What we build for independents.
Questions
Does Oriva integrate with Open Dental?
Open Dental is our first integration and it is in active development, not released. Today Oriva runs alongside Open Dental instead of inside it: we call the patient before the visit and email you the triage brief, and your team works in Open Dental exactly as it does now.
Do I have to install anything on my Open Dental server?
No. Nothing is installed on your practice server or workstations. The briefs arrive by email, so there is no software to deploy and nothing to maintain.
Will Oriva write the triage brief into the patient record?
That is what the native integration is being built to do: read the scheduling context Oriva needs and attach the pre-visit brief to the patient's record. Until it ships, the brief is delivered by email and your team decides what to keep.
Is Oriva an AI receptionist for Open Dental?
No. A receptionist answers your incoming line and books appointments. Oriva calls patients who are already booked and asks the clinical questions (what hurts, since when, what makes it worse) so the visit is planned before they arrive. It is triage, not reception, and it does not replace your front desk.
How is patient information handled?
Under a HIPAA business associate agreement signed with your practice before any patient information moves. Secrets are held in Google Secret Manager, the database is reached through the Cloud SQL connector, and phone numbers are stored by last four digits only.
